The Conversations Are the Work | On Connection

Published by Emma Rose Connolly at November 3, 2021

At Conversant we believe that conversation and connection are underutilized yet critical leverage points for achieving results. Whether it’s meetings, one-on-one check-ins, emails, or chat, studies show that leaders spend the majority of their workdays communicating. What if each of those conversations was truly valuable?

There is a design to conversations that drive value, and we can be students of that design, developing our conversational skills the same way an athlete works to get better at their sport. With practice, this skillset drives more results with less time, money, and stress. That’s why we say “the conversations are the work.” In this episode we dive into that phrase, sharing why conversation is a worthwhile focus not just for leaders, but for anyone that wants their working and personal relationships to be a source of value and fulfillment rather than waste and stress.

The Conversation Meter

Quote from Toby Wolfe, Vanity Fair, 1985:

“Language is our meeting place. It is the sea we live in. When I watch my children learning to talk I had the sense that they were not so much learning language as being claimed by it. Taken into it’s arms as if it were another parent. And so it is. In the arms of language they join the family of being human. They learn what has gone before, they will learn what is left to be done. In language they learn to laugh and to grieve, to be consoled in their grief and to console others. It is in language they will discover who they are. It is the common ground of our humanity.”
